Birthday Baby

Rule of Life #394: If you didn't document it, it didn't happen.

So my Magpie never turned one.  Until today.  Here is the small Leo's shining grin, gleeful as always, but especially when she is the focus of attention among a sea of loving faces.

Just don't try to cuddle her.  She's not ready to take your relationship to that level yet.  If you pick her up and squeeze her, she might turn around to find Mom or Dad gone forever.  It's too risky.  Best to cling with all her life to a parent, even bury her face in their chest if she can.  If you can't see them, they might disappear, Maggie.  Or they might stick around and wait for you to snuggle when you turn one and a half.  Families are like that.  Tenacious.

I made you a tres leches cake, Baby, and you didn't seem to mind.

But if it could have been all watermelon, all day long, that would have been better.

All these kids (plus Ella) sang a few rounds of Happy Birthday Toooo Yooouuu, helped blow out candles, then took turns to feed the baby a bite.  It took all of my self-control to not take a bite of the birthday girl.  Her elbow dimples are nearly too much.

There were many fun new toys to open, and they have been loved by everyone.  Noah and Greta even sometimes graciously let the one year old play with them.  No one has gotten their proper thanks yet for the showers of gifts, love, and weekends you have given us.  I have been trying to scientifically prove that the number of hours in a day has decreased since we had our third child and since I started training for a marathon.  Unsuccessfully so far.  I may have to try a new approach.  Less right foot-left foot-right foot-left foot, breathe-breathe-breathe, and more we are so very fortunate to find ourselves among so many caring and generous folks.  Thank you, everyone.

Happy birthday, small Magdalene.  We all love you to pieces.
